KAISER FREMONT ACUTE MEDICAL PSYCHIATRIC UNITINFO

The Kaiser Fremont OSHPD-1 Acute Care Psychiatric and Mental Health Unit is Kaiser Permanente’s first in-patient psychiatric facility. The project included the conversation of an existing med/surge unit and building addition to create the 18-patient bed facility designed to promote healing and well-being for its patients.

The program includes exam and consultation rooms, observation rooms, patient rooms, staff space, a meditation room, an enclosed secure outdoor garden, group therapy and activity space, and lots of exposure to natural light.

Silverman & Light provided electrical and lighting design. One of the key design features designed to help support patient recovery and was the integration of a fully tunable circadian lighting system to mimic the rise and fall of the sun. The state-of-the-art system has been shown in clinical studies to reduce anxiety, improve sleeping patterns, and support patient recovery.
